Now, for one of my more basic posts: How to install Pixelmon! Even though Pixelmon is one of the most amazing and complex mods that developers have to offer, it can be annoying and very complicated to download for those who don’t even know where to begin. So, want to play Pixelmon, but have no idea where to begin? Well I’ll be teaching you how to install Pixelmon on Windows, and even how to install Pixelmon on Mac. Whether you make mods for a living or have never downloaded one on your computer, simply follow this guide for instructions on how to download, install, and get started with the great Pixelmon mod.
Method 1 – The Easy Way
This method is best for those who have no or little experience with mods, and who don’t need to customize the mod or add anything on top of Pixelmon. This method will be using the Instant Pixelmon Mod Pack, which is technic launcher based, meaning you won’t have to download many files or mess with your computer at all! This method should work on both PC and Mac, so here’s how to begin:

- Get the Technic Launcher: This pack is used to install and play many modpacks easily, such as Tekkit, or Feed the Beast. If you already have this pack, you can skip to step two of this method.
- Head over to the TechnicPack website, at technicpack.net/download
- Click either “Windows“, “OSX“, or “Linux“, depending on which operating system you use
- Locate and open the file that just downloaded
- Log into your Minecraft account when prompted
- How to Install Pixelmon Modpack: These next few steps are for the recently updated “Technic Launcher 4.0” with a new design and more features.
- Once you open the launcher, click the “Modpacks” tab on the top of the window
- Enter “Instant Pixelmon” in the Search Bar on the left-hand side (if nothing appears, restart the launcher)
- Click “Install” in the bottom right-hand corner of the window
- Wait for the mod to load; This could take some time, depending on the strength of your internet connection
- Now, the mod should be loaded on the left-hand sidebar of the window, along with other pre-loaded modpacks
- Playing Pixelmon
- After clicking “Play” in the bottom right-hand corner of the window, Minecraft should open (may take a few seconds)
- The mods should be loaded, along with some extra goodies like a Minimap, and serveral fantastic servers already loaded under “Multiplayer”
Method 2 – The Hard Way
This method is great for those who would like to know how to install pixelmon, own a Windows or Mac computer, and have used/installed mods before, or who would like to customize the mod and/or layer more mods on top of Pixelmon. You will need administrator permission on your computer, or at least be able to download and explore files on the computer.
- Installing Forge: Forge is a mod loader that many mods require to run. If you already have Forge installed, you may skip to Step 2.
- Go to files.minecraftforge.net and download the version of Forge that works with the version of Pixelmon you would like to install
- For Pixelmon 3.0.4, download Forge for Minecraft 1.6.4; for Pixelmon 3.2.9+, download Forge for Minecraft 1.7.10
- Download Minecraft (if not already installed), and run the version that you’re installing Forge for atleast once
- Run the Forge Installer, and install Forge
- After it finishes installing, open Minecraft and select the profile named “Forge”. Test that it works before proceeding
- How to Install Pixelmon on PC: Note- there are a few mods that Pixelmon might conflict with, so it’s best to have all mods cleared before proceeding
- Download the Pixelmon file here – http://pixelmonmod.com/downloads.php that corresponds to the version of Minecraft/Forge you wish to play with
- Open the “Run” program in the Start Menu search bar, then type %appdata%
- Open the folder named “Roaming”, then open the folder named “.minecraft”
- Locate a folder inside “.minecraft”, named “mods”. Drag or copy the previously downloaded Pixelmon files into this folder. If no such folder exists, create one
- After completing all previous steps, simply open Minecraft, and attempt to run the Forge profile. Pixelmon should be installed!
- Optional: You can add other mods to Minecraft by simply placing them inside the “mods” folder. However, make sure they do not conflict with Pixelmon.
- How to Install Pixelmon on Mac: Note- there are a few mods that Pixelmon might conflict with, so it’s best to have all mods cleared before proceeding
- Download the Pixelmon file here – http://pixelmonmod.com/downloads.php that corresponds to the version of Minecraft/Forge you wish to play with
- Open “Finder”, and on your keyboard press “Command”+”Shift”+”G”
- Copy and paste this code: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft
- Locate a folder named “mods”. Drag or copy the previously downloaded Pixelmon files into this folder. If no such folder exists, create one
- After completing all previous steps, simply open Minecraft, and attempt to run the Forge profile. Pixelmon should be installed!
- Optional: You can add other mods to Minecraft by simply placing them inside the “mods” folder. However, make sure they do not conflict with Pixelmon.
Playing Pixelmon
Now that you know how to install pixelmon, you can go ahead and start playing! For a tutorial on how to play, simply visit the official wiki’s tutorial. However, remember that different servers may change different aspects of the mod and Minecraft in general; the wiki is specifically for Single Player.
